The Moonbow features claro walnut sides and an English walnut top. The bottom of the box is made from sugar maple. The art was created using the following woods: ambrosia maple, spalted maple, sugar maple, cherry, birch ply, pine, fir, wenge, claro walnut and lacewood.
The artwork was inspired by a local phenomenon called a “moonbow” in which a rainbow may in appear in the night sky at Cumberland Falls. The moon’s light is refracted by droplets of water to create a magical nighttime rainbow. The grain patterns in the blue pine and ambrosia maple reminded me of the base of the falls where the water churns up, mixing, bubbling and flowing down the river while the moon shines brightly overhead.
